Sign off On Skills-Medical Assistant

Minnesota and Wisconsin law does not prohibit medical assistants from serving as preceptors of apprentice medical assistants and evaluating and signing off on their skills in performing certain tasks.

Of course, this must be done under the authority and direction of a licensed provider, who serves as manager. This and the preceptor role is outlined as part of the contract with ICATAP.

How do we determine readiness for specific skills?

ICATAP  provides free online training for mentors/trainers of apprentices. In that training it is recommended to sequence the training with demonstration, guided practice and solo practice until it is determined that the apprentice is capable. The partner is in the drivers seat and readiness is specific to the individual. As mentors/trainers you are the expert in an active practice.

Does ICATAP provide skill development support?

Primary skill development is the prevue of the medical organization- HOWEVER ICATAP instructors are also well-versed in teaching skills.  We are happy to support trainers in techniques of teaching skills. Our partnership is includes supporting your managers and training staff in successfully teaching skills and teaming to support the apprentices to be successful. Don't hesitate to reach out!

ICATAP is flexible- As a partner, how much can we alter the academic sequence?

Flexibility is a key feature to ICATAP academics and we often advise apprentices to shift to modules that  match the present area of practice at work. However, if a partner determines they would like to make significant changes to our academic programming, they must consult with ICATAP education to ensure academic integrity. ICATAP  high board pass rates( 98%) are tied to our expert ability in academic development and we are determined to bring that  success rate to teach partnership.

As a trainer or manager, how do I determine if the apprentice is on pace with the academics?

ICATAP is your partner in every step along the way. We want to communicate regularly with you regarding the progress of each apprentice. ( We provide assessments and communicate as needed) The instructor monitors online success carefully and our system is capable of showing us each individual log in, time spent and work completed in each of our courses. The instructor not only monitors, they will reach out to the apprentice when any red flags appear and if not resolved will pull in the trainer/manager. We ask that you do the same and reach out to us.

What can we do if an apprentice does not pass boards?

ICATAP is available as long as needed to support review and study before boards. If an apprentice does not pass boards, the review course is available as long as it is needed. Additionally, ICATAP will consult to develop a study plan we can execute together.

The instructors at ICATAP are very responsive and willing to support us in teaching skills and working closely with us when challenges arise.
